Chapter twenty-seven
December
December slammed the book shut.
Sheâd read the same page twenty different times, unable to focus on the words. Every single creak or sound of footsteps sent her stomach into her throat and made her palms sweat. Being confined to the healerâs quarters didnât help. Even if she was far away from the main room as possible.
She reached up to brush her fingers against the healing scab. Ahren had seemed just as surprised at his reaction as she had been.
The healer bustled about, jars clinking and clanking as she filled her tonics. Sheâd terrified December at first. When sheâd first woken up, she thought she was back at the Academy and sheâd panicked. But she was actually a very nice and caring woman, except for the tonics she made December take. She made a face. They were disgusting and tasted like she imagined dirt would.
The infirmary was always busy, fae coming in right and left with injuries from rebuilding the Citadel or scuffles between one another. Sheâd gathered that most everyone who lived here was an angry, violent lot.
Usually, one Reaper stayed within earshot. This was one of the rare moments theyâd left her alone over the past few days. She didnât know how she felt about their presence.
Nathan was quiet and easier going than Wayden, with a quick smile. She wasnât sure how heâd found out about her love of stars, but heâd sneaked her out of the infirmary the past two nights, just sitting with her as she watched them overhead. He expected nothing from her, he never touched her, and he was never harshâ¦even if he was her captor. She told herself that the only reason she agreed was so that she could find a way out, but truth be told, she enjoyed it.
A noise beyond the curtain made her flinch, gripping the arms of her chair like her life was already in danger. The healerâs voice met her ears, and then heavy steps marched just outside the curtain. Her heart pounded, and her palms grew sweaty.
âIâm breaking you out of here,â Wayden announced, drawing the curtain back.
December gaped at him. He looked the same as he always did: all-black attire, tousled blond hair, and a cocky attitude. He crossed his arms over his chest and waited.
Seeing as she had little choice, she pushed herself out of the chair and walked towards him. She hated how weak she felt. The healer said it would still take a few days before she was back to normal, but at least she could walk without having to rely on anyone.
He swung around and started walking.
She tried to ignore the stares of those in the infirmary that trailed after them, though she expected it had more to do with present company and not because they could sense what she wasâshe hoped.
Wayden didnât seem to mind. In fact, he didnât give his attention to anything beyond the next steps in front of them.
âWhere are you taking me?â she asked quietly.
If he heard her, he didnât bother to answer.
